(Required for section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations; optional for others.)
What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? AMI is focused on the distribution of independent and community media from Cuba and developing cultural exchange projects between Cuban and US citizens. AMI is playing an important role both in Cuba and the US. In Cuba AMI is providing young, emerging filmmakers with an educational distributor that is marketing their work in the US and providing them with an income from the sales. In the US, AMI is making this independent work available to universities and individuals who previously could only access this material through direct contact with the filmmakers or pirated copies.
Describe the organizations program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 DistributionIn 2014 AMI released two new Cuban documentaries, ELENA and Tierralismo, in conjunction with our distribution partner, Icarus Films in New York.We have had DVD sales to 14 new colleges and universities via our collaboration with Icarus Films, NY; journals such as Agriculture and Human Values, Educational Media Review and the Slavic Review have requested screeners; five film festivals (Planet in Focus, Mendicino Film Festival, DOXA Documentary Film Festival and the LASA film Festival) requested screeners and ELENA was screened at the LASA Film Festival; the Slavic Review wrote a very positive review of They Would all Be Queens; and most of the Cuba catalogue is now available via streaming on Docuseek. Sales of our Cuba catalogue DVDs have since risen significantly, providing every filmmaker with income.AMI Director, Alexandra Halkin co-wrote two articles with renowned culture critic, Sujatha Fernandes, Stories that Resonate: New Cultures of Documentary Filmmaking in Cuba and Do Cubans Really Want U.S. Style Internet Freedom? The first article discussed the current state of documentary filmmaking in Cuba and the important role of these filmmakers in documenting the stories of a changing Cuba, published in the LASAForum, Spring 2014. The second article was about President Obamas recent announcement of normalizing diplomatic relations with Cuba and allowing U.S. tech companies the ability to improve Cubas internet infrastructure was published on the NACLA (North American Congress on Latin America) website and republished on Truthout. Both articles were shared extensively on social media.

29 TouringIn addition to screening ELENA, a ground breaking exploration of Cubas public housing crisis, at Drexel University, the Maysles Institute in Harlem, and New York University, AMI and director Marcelo Martn participated in a panel discussion with New York City public housing advocates at the CUNY Graduate Center in November. The Closing Distances/Cerrando Distancias 3 Tour with POV Executive Producer, Simon Kilmurry presented at the Young Directors Film Festival (Muestra Joven) in Havana, where he screened clips from the feature documentaries, Presunto culpable (Presumed Guilty) and Nostalgia por la luz (Nostalgia for the Light), both of which have previously screened on POV. During the screenings, Mr. Kilmurry discussed the common elements that made each film great despite the fact that they are completely different stylistically. Mr. Kilmurrys presentations as part of the Muestra Joven were very successful and reached a number of young filmmakers. POVs feature documentary, Getting Back to Abnormal was screened at the EICTV (International Film and TV School with ISA (Superior Art Institute) students in attendance. Closing Distances 3 then traveled to Pinar del Ro to screen Getting Back to Abnormal, and engaged with a large and economically and educationally diverse Cuban audience. Throughout the tour a number of young filmmakers gave Mr. Kilmurry copies of their films. During our visit to Havana we were able to meet with the Director of the Havana Film Festival, Ivan Giroud and which resulted in Getting Back to Abnormal being included in the festival.

30 ProductionIn fall of 2014 AMI was contracted by a documentary production company, Jigsaw Productions that was looking for material for their documentary film on Frank Sinatra in Cuba. The production company was looking for specific images and film related to Sinatras travels to Cuba in the late 1940s. AMI worked with Cuban documentary filmmaker, Karel Ducasse to research both photos and film in various locations in Havana and copy materials for use by the production.
